Higher watts no longer guarantee a brighter space; in the LED era, you design for lumens (brightness) and lumens per watt (efficiency), while watts mostly show up on your energy bill.
Why Watts Used to Mean Bright
Back in the incandescent age, wattage was basically a brightness nickname: 40 W for a chill glow, 60 W for everyday use, 100 W when you wanted everything lit up. Roughly, that 100 W bulb produced around 1,600 lumens, 60 W about 800, and 40 W about 450.
That tight link between watts and lumens only worked because those old bulbs were all inefficient in roughly the same way. Once CFLs and LEDs arrived, that relationship broke: two bulbs can draw the same watts and produce radically different lumens.
Modern bulb shopping should focus on lumens, not watts, because watts now mostly tell you how hard you are hitting the power grid, not how bright your dance floor or cocktail bar will actually feel.

Lumens: Your Real Brightness Currency
Lumens are your brightness metric—the raw amount of visible light a source throws into the room. Higher lumens mean more visual punch, regardless of how many watts were burned to produce them. Everyday fixtures span a wide range: soft accent pieces around 100–300 lumens, general room lights around 400–700 lumens, and task fixtures for reading, makeup, or food prep at 800–1,200 lumens per fixture.
Think in lumens per square foot instead of gut feel. For home-style reference levels, living or lounge areas feel cozy but functional at about 10–20 lumens per sq ft, dining areas where faces and food should stand out usually need around 30–40 lumens per sq ft, and task-heavy zones such as kitchen counters, makeup stations, or a DJ booth often work best at roughly 50–80 lumens per sq ft.
Example: a 15 ft × 15 ft lounge (225 sq ft) at 20 lumens per sq ft needs about 4,500 lumens total. You might hit that with a 2,000-lumen ceiling wash, two 1,000-lumen wall fixtures, and a couple of 250-lumen table lamps—layered, flexible, and much smoother than one blinding overhead can.

Efficacy: More Glow, Less Load
Now we get technical: efficacy is lumens per watt (lm/W). It is the “how hard does this thing hit?” stat for lighting. Old-school incandescent bulbs sit around 10–17 lm/W. Modern LEDs typically land around 80–120 lm/W. You get the same brightness with a fraction of the watts, which is why LEDs can feel like cheating.
Take a 20 ft × 20 ft dance floor (400 sq ft) where you want roughly 20 lumens per sq ft. That is 8,000 lumens of light. With decent LEDs at about 100 lm/W, you are pulling about 80 W total, while with incandescents at about 15 lm/W, you are closer to 530 W for the same visual impact.
Multiply that across a whole venue and your “more watts = brighter” mindset quickly turns into “more watts = hotter rigs, bigger breakers, and an ugly bill.” Real efficiency is about bright-enough lumens delivered with minimal watts, plus smart control—dimmers, sensors, and schedules that keep light on only where and when you need it, just like the efficiency tricks outlined for lighting controls and usage.
